When working in Australia, your employers are required to withhold tax from your salary and pay this to the Australian Tax Office. However, at the end of the financial year or when you leave Australia you may be entitled to claim a large proportion of these tax payments back.
Your employer will work out how much tax to withhold based on information you provide in your tax file number declaration form, when you start work. If you do not provide a tax file number, your employer will be required to withhold tax at the top marginal rate, which is over 45%.
Tax file number
Tax file numbers (TFNs) are issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and used to identify your tax records. Your TFN is unique and valid for life, even if you change jobs, move interstate or change your name. If you leave the country and later come back to Australia on another visa you still use the same TFN.
Your TFN application is included in every WorkingDownunder Arrival Package - click below to choose your package...
