Employment and training courses

Make sure you have the relevant employment certificate…

In Australia, health and safety laws require that workers in certain professions (including Hospitality & Construction) undergo compulsory basic training and become certified to be eligible for employment. You'd be forgiven for thinking that one course covers every State and/or Territory in Australia but unfortunately there isn't always Australia wide co-operation with courses. For example Green, Red & Blue Cards are required for anyone wishing to work on a construction site – the different colours represent different States so you don't need them all, just the one relevant to the State or Territory you plan to work in. For example, Blue is valid in Queensland, the Green & Red Cards are valid for Victoria & New South Wales.

Responsible Service of Alcohol Course (RSA)

Tax and refunds

Tax File Number

In Australia you will need a Tax File Number or TFN, or you could be taxed 49% of your wages. You don't need your TFN straight away but you should apply for it as soon as possible as once you start work, your employer will ask you to fill in a Tax File Declaration Form. An Australian Tax File Number (TFN) is available as part of our Arrival Packages.

Tax Refunds

Superannuation is a form of forced savings by your employer for retirement and it's calculated based on your gross pay. All workers including temporary residents (working holiday makers) that engage in any form of paid employment while in Australia will have a contribution made to either their nominated or employer's nominated superannuation account. When departing Australia, if you have worked in Australia as a temporary resident you may be eligible to claim your superannuation benefits through the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment Scheme. It is important that you keep details of where and when you worked for various employers as well as any payment details such as pay-slips. You maybe entitled to a significant refund.
